This can begin with wearing shoes that are acceptable for the job, in addition to ensuring they fit correctly. It may help to choose a shoe that has a multi-layer insole that can provide extra support. Many people wear work shoes that have a wide toe box, which can give the toes ample room to move freely in. Jobs that require safety toed shoes have a steel tip on the ends, which is adequate in protecting the toes while tripping, or if a heavy object falls on the foot. The cuboid bone is located on the outside of the foot and is one of seven tarsal bones. Cuboid syndrome occurs when this bone partially dislocates, which can happen from an injury. An ankle sprain may cause the peroneal muscles to put excess pressure on this tarsal bone, leading to pain and discomfort. An effective treatment method may include performing specific types of stretches that can help to loosen tight peroneal muscles. Additionally, the bone may be manipulated back into its normal position, and it may help to pad and tape the foot for extra stability. Many patients find getting a deep tissue massage can relax the calf and peroneal muscle, which can eliminate pressure on the cuboid bone. If you have endured an injury, and have pain on the outside of your foot, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat cuboid syndrome.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Inc.. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Timeline for Children’s Foot Growth

Many parents are interested in knowing how fast their child’s feet grow. It is common for toddlers to have new shoes every few months that can accommodate their growing feet. Research has indicated the feet grow approximately three-quarters of an inch per year during the ages of one and three, and will increase to half an inch between ages three and six. Some parents find it helpful for their child to wear open-toe shoes, such as sandals, which can give the toes adequate room to move freely. It is beneficial that the first pair of shoes is purchased when walking begins outside, which can protect the feet from various surfaces. Until that time, the overall foot can become stronger as the child walks barefoot while indoors. If you would like additional information about when and what type of shoes to purchase for your child, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you with the knowledge you are seeking.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Inc.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Causes and Treatment of Hammertoe

An abnormal bend in the middle joint of a toe is a sign of hammertoe, a deformity caused by a weakening of the muscles, tissue, and tendon in the joint. A hammertoe also can be the result of arthritis or a genetic predisposition to joint problems. Trauma, injury, or improper footwear may also be factors in the formation of a hammertoe. Symptoms include pain when flexing the toe or wearing shoes. The toe may also become reddened. In many cases of hammertoe, a corn or callus develops on the raised portion of the joint as it rubs against the inside of a shoe. When trying to determine the best way to deal with a hammertoe, a podiatrist may take X-rays to determine the toe’s current bone and ligament structure. In some cases, taping and padding of the toe can reduce painful effects. Anti-inflammatory or cortisone injections also can lessen the discomfort in some cases. Orthotic devices and surgery are other options for hammertoe treatment. For more information on dealing with a hammertoe deformity, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Podiatry Inc.. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

Wearing the Right Shoes for Pickleball

Pickleball is a sport that has become increasingly popular. It is defined as a combination of badminton and tennis, and while it is enjoyable for many people, it may cause heel pain. Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that can happen from frequently playing pickleball, and it may be beneficial to purchase shoes that are designed for this sport. Shoes of this type can help to protect the feet and are referred to as court shoes. They are made of materials that allow easy movement from side to side and can cushion the foot from impact. The upper part of this type of shoe has heavier and thicker material which can help to reinforce the ankle. This can be beneficial as it moves in quick bursts from side to side. Additionally, the midsole is thinner when compared to running shoes, and can protect the foot more efficiently as the game is played. If you would like to learn more about the type of shoes that are needed to play pickleball, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the right choice.
