There are many types of deformities that can happen to the feet. One of these is referred to as a hammertoe, which can cause the toe to bend downward instead of naturally pointing forward. It can develop gradually due to genetic reasons, or from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Additional reasons why this ailment may occur can include an injury to the toe, or medical conditions such as arthritis or nerve damage. Common side effects of hammertoe may consist of corns or calluses, they can form on top of the affected toe, and it may be difficult to walk and flex your foot. Patients may find mild relief when insoles are worn in the shoes, and surgery may be a necessary option to correct severe hammertoe. If you are afflicted with this ailment, it’s suggested that you consult with a podiatrist as quickly as possible for proper treatment to begin.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, otherwise known as flat feet, is a foot condition that can be recognized when the feet have little to no arch and has developed during adulthood. This condition can be painful, and may occur when the posterior tibial tendon is inflamed, overstretched, damaged, or torn. When the arches of the foot fall, or are flattened, you lose the support you would normally get when walking. Those who are frequently involved in high-impact sports like basketball or tennis may have a greater risk of obtaining this condition. To help treat this ailment, it is suggested that you rest your feet, and refrain from activities that put weight on your feet. Some patients have also found physical therapy, as well as the use of orthotics to be helpful, as they provide extra support to make up for the fallen arches. For more severe cases, it may be beneficial to have surgery performed. For more information on flat feet and how to best treat them, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.
Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.
Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Children’s feet may become stronger when shoes are not worn while indoors. When children are barefoot, they start performing a grasping action with their toes, which can be beneficial in strengthening the entire foot. When walking is done outdoors, it is important to purchase shoes that fit correctly. It is important to measure your child’s feet approximately every three months to avoid purchasing footwear that may constrain their toes. Focusing on buying shoes that are lightweight and made of a breathable material may also be beneficial to the overall health of your child’s feet. Adequate room is necessary in the top of the shoe for the toes to move freely in. Additionally, proper foot care can consist of washing the feet daily, followed by drying them completely between the toes. When the toes are trimmed in a straight line, uncomfortable foot conditions that can include ingrown toenails may be prevented. If you would like additional information about how to care for your child’s feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...
Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.
Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.
Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.
As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.
As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.
Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.
Be watchful for any pain or injury.
Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

The sesamoid bones are located under the ball of the foot. They help to enable the big toe to press down, and pain and discomfort may develop if they should become inflamed. This may happen as a result of participating in running and jumping activities, or from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Common symptoms that can be associated with this ailment may include pain on the bottom of the foot, and it may be difficult to stand on your tiptoes. Patients who have this condition may find moderate relief when the affected foot is elevated, and it may help to use an insole that can support the arch. If you feel you may have sesamoiditis, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat this condition.

Sesamoiditis
Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.
Causes of Sesamoiditis
Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
